Who we are
Fresh Start Designs, founded by Robert Smith in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, is a premier residential design firm dedicated to transforming outdated spaces into modern masterpieces. Raised in the heart of southern Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Robert grew up surrounded by the Amish ingenuity and craftsmanship that shaped his passion for design. His journey began in the late 1980s with a drafting class as a high school freshman, igniting a lifelong commitment to creating exceptional spaces. Following his teacher’s guidance, he worked in construction for three years post-graduation, gaining hands-on skills that enhance his design expertise today.
Returning to education, Robert earned his degree and launched his career in the late 1990s with various architectural and engineering firms, building a strong foundation. Since the early 2000s, he has collaborated with custom and production home builders across Pennsylvania, Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Georgia, accumulating over 25 years of experience working with structural and civil engineers on new homes and remodels. For the past decade, he has focused on reviving homes through remodeling, renovations, and additions, partnering with homeowners to address their unique challenges.
With over 20 years in leadership, Robert has guided teams of designers and drafters, fostering growth through training and streamlined processes—a skill he brings to every project. His joy lies in the art of design, the precision of project management, and solving homeowners’ struggles with innovative solutions. This passion led him to establish Fresh Start Designs, offering a no-obligation, flexible process tailored to every need—whether exploring possibilities for existing spaces, delivering detailed construction plans, or providing design project management during construction.
Based in Phoenixville, PA, where he resides in a historic 1773 stone house, Robert understands the desire to update a home while preserving its unique essence. He serves the Philadelphia suburbs and surrounding counties, partnering with interior designers, engineers, and general contractors. This collaboration ensures a seamless, cost-effective experience, saving clients time and money compared to traditional design-build firms.
